1973-06-10 – Frankfurt, Germany – Radstadion – This is in Phil’s TOP 3 of UFO’s all time lows. FLOCK, FAIRPORT CONVENTION, BADFINGER AND BEGGARS OPERA were all lined up for this POP FESTIVAL IN MANNHEIM but could not make it and was replaced by UFO and SOFTMACHINE.  UFO opened and was greeted by a mass of boos and whistles. They did not play bad but the public was unmoved.  Phil still remembers this gig and admitts its one of their worst onstage experience followed by Tokyo 1998 and Manchester 2000.

1973-07-18 – Regensburg, Germany – This is the Concert where Michael Schenker temporary replaced Bernie Marsden. They played the next 2 Shows with Michael before Bernie arrived in germany. At the End of the Tour Michael fly to London to live in Phil Moogs Flat. The Rest is History. Support Act:Scorpions 1973-07-18 – Regensburg, Germany The famous Concert where Michael Schenker temporary replaced Bernie Marsden.. July the 18th 1973 was the blackest day in the history of a british rockband UFO. They were about to start their German Tour on that day but their leadguitarist Bernie Marsden could not find his passport. The boys left London without the guitarist three hours before their first show they arrived in Regensburg.“We wanted to play no matter what“ – UFO Boss Pete Way tells the story. „But the luck was on our side. We have had a german band Scorpions from Hannover opening for us. Their leadguitarist Michael Schenker was super, better than Bernie Marsden ever was.“ It did not take long for UFO to consider: they took the guitarist born on the 10th of January 1955 in Sarstedt near Hannover on board straight away. „He was about to stay with us for a few days at first, but he played so well with us during the Tour that we took him to London with us.“ Michael lived with singer Phil Mogg for the first two months there. In the meantime he has found his own place there. „He will bring us luck. We will make it with him at last“, dreams the bassplayer Pete Way. UFO are to be seen on TV – Show ‚Music Today‘ on the 13th October – with Michael Schenker. And they tour Germany again in November. Scorpions are again their support-act – but his time with a New lead guitarist.

1977

Lights Out is the sixth studio album by the British rock band UFO, released in May 1977. All songs are band originals except for “Alone Again Or” which is a cover of a song by the band Love. Kerrang! magazine listed the album at No. 28 among the “100 Greatest Heavy Metal Albums of All Time”. Easy choice to make if you are thinking about buying one UFO album.

In my opinion, “Lights Out” (1977) was the band at their peak. Sure, “Phenomenon”, “Force It” and “No Heavy Petting” were all great albums with some awesome (and now classic) songs. “Strangers In The Night” is their best “live” release – and one of my favorite live rock albums of all time. But, “Lights Out” was head and shoulders above the rest featuring outstanding song writing, great vocals by singer Phil Mogg, and some incredible guitar work by Michael Schenker (the rest of UFO was in fine shape too). “Lights Out” features the blistering title track , “Too Hot To Handle”, the near 7 minute “Love To Love”, and a hidden gem “Try me”.

Only bad thing about this album is that it’s only 8 songs long. All UFO is good old fashioned rock & roll… but if you’re looking for one to buy, get this one. A true classic from an underrated legendary rock band.

2008 EMI’s remastered edition includes 4 bonus tracks, recorded live at The Roundhouse, London in 1976, and also some writing credits are corrected.
